Melly's Market + Café is a registered charity and social enterprise that provides a training environment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn about working and develop their skills in a café and Market open to the public.

Our participants have joined our program to build transferable employment skills, develop their confidence and self-advocacy skills in the workplace, and plan their career goals.
Each participant receives a comprehensive training and development strategy customized and aligned to their needs, abilities and goals.

Our café is open to the public, and participants receive authentic learning opportunities as they move between the cafe, Market, kitchen and development room.

Job Description:

Melly's Market + Café, a registered charity and not-for-profit café, is seeking a passionate Cafe Manager to join our team. At Melly's, we are dedicated to serving great coffee, baked goods, and goods made by individuals of all abilities. We are looking for a motivated individual who is enthusiastic about growing a coffee brand that supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a startup business in Whitby and contribute to our mission.

Qualifications:

- Previous experience with employee hiring, onboarding, and training preferred.
- Professional barista experience, preferably in the specialty coffee industry, is required.
- Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.
- Strong customer service experience is required.
- Experience with POS systems, printers, and other professional café equipment is required.
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with Word, iOS, Square, and Google Suite, is required.
- Possession of a Food Handler's Certificate is required.

- Current, clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector (or the ability to obtain a current, clear criminal record check before beginning work)


Responsibilities:

1. Promote our mission:
- Embody and promote the values, culture, and mission of elevating opportunities for the disability community.

2. Coaching, training, and policies:
- Assist with coaching and training in barista skills, customer service, retail, and health and safety.
- Create policies, procedures, and training documents and effectively communicate them to staff.

3. Operations and administration:
- Create and manage the monthly café schedule, approving any changes.
- Handle inventory management, ordering, and receiving products while minimizing waste and addressing quality-related issues.
- Report and resolve inaccuracies or quality issues in received orders.
- Initiate and execute special projects aimed at improving different areas of the business.
- Submit weekly reports on waste, food, staff, maintenance, and inventory to the Director of Operations.
- Complete weekly sales and waste reports.
- Maintain accurate records of product waste.
- Submit bi-weekly payroll reports and make necessary corrections.
- Keep POS systems up to date.

4. Team support and development:
- Jump in and provide support in serving customers and supporting the team of talent.
- Ensure proper café policies and procedures are followed by all staff, including attendance, health and safety policies, product standards, and customer service.
- Assist in recruiting and onboarding new staff, including barista training.
- Provide regular and ongoing training for supervisors and new staff, including performance reviews.
- Offer strategic input and suggestions to increase store profitability and efficiency.

5. Product knowledge and communication:
- Maintain up-to-date coffee knowledge, including current offerings, and confidently and accurately communicate product knowledge to staff and customers.

6. Miscellaneous:
- Be available on-call to address any issues that may arise.
- Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the company.
